How Should Swimming Goggles Fit? A Practical Guide to Leak-Free Comfort
Swimming goggles should feel snug and secure without painful pressure. A good fit creates a gentle seal around your eyes, stays in place when you push off the wall and turn, and doesn't require an overly tight strap to keep water out.
If your goggles leak, leave deep marks, fog, or feel distracting in the water, this guide will help you identify the likely cause. Start with the seal and nose bridge, then fine-tune the strap.
Start with a dry suction test.
Before putting the strap on, hold the goggles over your eyes and press the eye cups gently into place. A well-matched pair should create light, comfortable suction for a moment. This is a useful first check that the eye seals sit evenly against your face.
The test isn't about forcing the goggles onto your face. If they pinch, sit on your eyelids, leave an obvious gap, or feel unstable right away, adjust the nose bridge or try a different fit instead of relying on a tighter strap.
Choose the nose bridge before tightening the strap
The nose bridge controls the distance between the lenses. If it is too narrow, the goggles can pinch around the nose or pull the eye seals out of position. If it is too wide, the inner edges of the goggles may not seal well and can let water in.
Choose the size that lets both eye seals rest naturally around your eyes without pressing on the bridge of your nose. Current Smart Swim 2 LT, Smart Swim 2, and Smart Swim 2 PRO goggles include five interchangeable, arched nose bridges, from XS to XL, with the Medium size installed out of the box.
Keep the nose bridge card in your case for your first swim. If water enters near the inside edge of either lens or the bridge feels tight, swap to a different nose bridge size and retest the fit.

Set the strap for stability, not pressure.
The strap keeps a good seal in place. It should be firm enough that the goggles do not shift during turns, but loose enough that you can finish a swim without aching around your eye sockets or temples.
- Put the goggles in their comfortable position first, then pull the strap over your head.
- Adjust in small increments. A little more tension can help a general leak, but an overly tight strap can distort the seals and make the fit uncomfortable.
- Position the two straps at the back of your head, with one slightly higher than the other for stability. If you wear a swim cap, put your goggles on first, then pull the cap over the straps.
For Smart Swim 2 and Smart Swim 2 PRO swimmers using heart-rate tracking, this order helps the sensor stay in direct, snug contact with your temple. Move any hair away from the sensor and keep the goggles secure without making them uncomfortable.
Troubleshoot leaks and pressure in your first few laps
A dry fit can feel different once you are moving through the water. Swim a few easy lengths, then notice where and when the issue appears. That pattern usually points to the adjustment that will help.
-
Slow leak around one lens: Make sure the eye seal is secure and sits evenly against your skin.
-
Leak near the nose: Try a different nose-bridge size. The bridge that feels fine on deck may not seal best while swimming.
-
Goggles shift on turns: Add a small amount of strap tension after confirming that the nose bridge and seals are correct.
-
Leak mostly on the display lens: If a small strap adjustment does not help, follow FORM's model-specific fit guidance for switching the display lens to the other eye. If you use an arched nose bridge, you may also need to change its orientation.
-
Deep red marks or headache-like pressure: Loosen the strap and reassess the nose bridge. A secure fit should not feel punishing.
Fogging and leaking are different problems.
Water entering the lens points to a fit issue. Fogging usually comes from a temperature difference between the lens, water, and air, so it doesn't automatically mean your goggles fit poorly.
To help clear fog during a swim, dip the lenses in the water. For Smart Swim 2 LT and Smart Swim 2, avoid touching or rubbing the inside of the lenses, especially when dry, because this can affect the anti-fog treatment.
For Smart Swim 2 PRO, follow FORM's anti-fog spray instructions before swimming.
After swimming, rinse the goggles with clean, cold fresh water and let them air-dry fully before storing them in the protective case.
A quick fit checklist
-
The goggles create gentle suction before you put on the strap.
-
The nose bridge feels natural and does not press into your nose.
-
The strap is secure, not cranked tight.
-
The seals stay even around both eyes during easy swimming and turns.
-
You can finish a session without persistent leaks or painful pressure.
